Morgan Lovell is a composer, cellist and improviser based in Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada. She received her bachelor’s degree in contemporary music from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2019, where she studied composition under Linda Caitlin Smith.
In the summer of 2018 Morgan attended Waterloo Region Contemporary Music Sessions (WRCMS) where she collaborated with both Canadian and international composers and improvisers to create and perform new musical works. Morgan has co-created and presented concerts of contemporary music in Kitchener-Waterloo as a member of The Yacht Club, a collective of local composer/performers. Morgan’s work has been commissioned by local ensembles Ekleipsis Guitar Trio and Bent Brass Trio.
Morgan has had the opportunity to perform several works by both Canadian and international composers at the Open Ears Festival, Between the Ears Festival, and in various shows presented by NUMUS Concerts. In 2018, she was the winner of the sixth annual NUMUS Concerts Emerging Improviser Contest and received the opportunity to perform alongside the local improvisation collective Digital Prowess.
As a composer, Morgan draws from her interest in improvisation to bring elements of spontaneity to her music and enjoys exploring the boundaries that exist between composer and performer.
Morgan is also member of the Kitchener-Waterloo based indie/folk band Safe as Houses.
