The Association of Canadian Women Composers (ACWC/AFCC) is the only professional association of women and women-identified composers and musicians in Canada. It actively supports music written by Canadian women. The ACWC promotes its members on this website, and publishes a bi-annual Journal highlighting activities and articles of interest. Whispering River Orchestra, Riversongs Cultural Fall Fair
Join the Whispering River Orchestra’s second weekend of the Riversongs Cultural Fall Fair: A 40 Year Garden: The Cultivation of the Association of Canadian Women Composers, taking place from September 18th – 20th. The weekend starts with a coffee house on Friday, Sept. 18th, hosted by Katherine Wheatley. The weekend continues on Saturday, Sept. 19th, with a series of open-door workshops for people of all ages interested in learning new instruments, private lessons hosted by many talented musicians, a Creative Kayaking session at Foley Matheson Beach hosted by Katja Mathys, orchestral and poetry workshops, a composition circle, and a discussion circle on creative sustainability with many renowned Canadian women composers. The weekend ends on Sunday, Sept. 20th with a B.Y.O Picnic concert featuring a variety of music by Canadian women, including the world premiere of the piece Frontlines by Janet Danielson, the winner of the Riversongs A.C.W.C. 2020 Award.

In 2021, the ACWC/AFCC will celebrating 40 years since its inception in 1981. This is a time to look back to the past as well as look to the future of the organization and of the music of Canadian women. Many events and activities are being planned. Brenda Margaret Muller has been chosen as the winner of the 2020 ACWC Initiatives Fund for new creative work projects or compositions. Muller’s project relates to her Riversongs Festival of community-based music, through which she will, in turn, sponsor an award to an ACWC member for a new composition for the Riversongs Festival. The new work will be scored for community orchestra and/or community orchestra and choir. Muller is founder and Artistic Director of the Riversongs Festival, which occurs in Parry Sound, Ontario. The festival, involving Whispering River Orchestra and Community Choir, is tentatively scheduled for August/September, 2020, but will be further rescheduled if required, due to coronavirus.

Gayle Young has been awarded an ACWC/AFCC Honorary Membership in November, 2019 for her exceptional accomplishments as an innovative composer, instrument creator/inventor, writer, feminist and administrator. She has been an ACWC member since the very beginning, serving on the ACWC Board for many years. Her compositions, many of them electroacoustical and/or soundscape oriented, rank among the most highly esteemed Canadian works today. More info here.
ACWC Composer, music publisher, and benefactor Roberta Stephen was honoured with a reception at The GRAND in Calgary on June 2, 2019. She received both an ACWC Honorary Life Membership, presented by ACWC Treasurer Janet Danielson, and a Violet Archer Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by John Reid, the Prairie Regional Director of the Canadian Music Centre. Laura Hawley, composer, choral conductor and pianist from Edmonton, is founding artistic director of the Hypatia’s Voice Women’s Choir.
Maren Lisac, composer from Montreal, is composing music for Indonesian pelog-tuned guitar and live electronics. More info about award and recipients here.
Stephanie Orlando has been chosen as the first winner of the new ACWC Initiatives Fund Award, which supports members who are composing/producing new creative work projects. Orlando’s project is titled ‘wave’ is composed for flute, percussion, and electronics. It explores negative thought patterns with an influence of new wave music. The funds will be used for equipment rental and travel to the premiere in New York City in June. More info here.

Émergences – Two Concerts, Wednesday, July 31, 8:30 pm at Galerie d’art Le Livart, Montreal, Quebec, and Friday, August 2, 2019, 8:00 pm at Canadian Music Centre (Toronto), and , presenting five new commissioned works for a flute-guitar duet (Sara Constant flutist, An-Laurence Higgins guitarist) by five new ACWC composers from Montreal and Toronto, Véronique Girard, Gabrielle Harnois-Blouin, Shelley Marwood, Thais Montanari, and Lieke van der Voort. The ACWC Art Song Concert – in honour of Rebekah Cummings (1980 – 2019) – occurred Saturday, May 18, 8:00 pm at Conrad Grebel Chapel/University of Waterloo, Ontario. Clarisse Tonigussi, soprano & Narmina Efendiyeva, piano, performed music of 9 ACWC composers: Rebekah Cummings, Jana Skarecky, Carol Ann Weaver, Edith Covach, Christie Morrison (also singing), Nephenee Rose, Karen Sunabacka, Julia Jacklein & Fiona Evison.
