Chia-lin Cathy Kuo is a Taiwanese-Canadian composer whose musical journey reflects the strength of immigration. When she immigrated from Taiwan to British Columbia with her 11-year-old son, little did she know it would shape her musical path.
Kuo was born in Taipei, Taiwan. She began learning piano at the age of six and continued until she took a long break at thirteen. She initially majored in Sociology in college before finding her passion for music at Berklee College of Music, where she spent one and a half years in the Film Scoring program. After working in non-music-related jobs for several years, she decided to pursue her master’s degree in Composition at the University of California, Irvine. After graduation, she returned to Taiwan and served as a lecturer in the department of music at Taipei Municipal University of Education. In 2013, she immigrated to Canada, entering the DMA in Composition program at the University of British Columbia, where she studied composition with Stephen Chatman and Dorothy Chang, earning her doctoral degree in 2018.
Currently an adjunct assistant professor at National Taiwan University of Arts, Cathy Kuo resides in Vancouver with her son during summers and school breaks.
In recent years, Kuo collaborated with various chamber music ensembles, including the Sun Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra, Golden Woodwind Quintet (Taiwan), Vancouver's Elysian Trio, Paragon Trio, and the Meeks Duo (piano duo). Additionally, she actively participates in local music events on the Canadian West Coast, presenting her compositions at events like 2023 Sonic Boom in Vancouver, the 2022 Blueridge Chamber Fest, and the 2019 Canada Music Day.

Cathy Kuo est une compositrice originaire de Taïwan. Elle a obtenu son MFA en Composition à l'Université de Californie, Irvine en 2007 et DMA en composition à L'Université de la British Columbia en 2018, où elle a étudié avec Dr. Stephen Chatman et Dr. Dorothy Chang.
Kuo a d'abord étudié la sociologie pendant la period à l'universitaire et la production de télévision à l'Université de Boston(M.S.) avant d'entrer au Berklee College of Music, où elle a passé un an et demi dans le programme de musique de film scoring. Dans la vingtaine, elle a poursuit quelques partitions pour la télépublicité. Passionné de la musique orchestrale, Kuo a étudié la composition avec un célèbre compositeur Taïwanais: Dr. Gordon S.W. Chin pour deux ans avant de poursuivre ses études supérieures en profession de compositeur musical.
Les principales compositions orchestrales de Kuo incluent le concerto pour piano Quin Qun Wu Qu,Revival, Hope, Love et Urban Suite. Ce dernier a eu deux présentations en 2018, du Sun Taipei Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra (à Taïwan) et de Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (le deuxième mouvement d'Urban Suite) à Winnipeg New Music Festival. La même année, ses Deux Amoureux au Clair de Lune pour flûte, alto et harpe, commandée par Elysian Trio. Sa nouvelle pièce, The Amazing Years, crée par Golden Woodwind Quintet à National Recital Hall (Taiwan) en Avril 2019. Sa dernière commande est The Meeks Suite for piano pour four mains, commandé par le duo Meeks. Kuo est actuellement adjoint professeur (assistant professor) à l'Université Nationale des Arts de Taïwan. Elle vit actuellement à Vancouver avec son fils pendant l'été et les vacances scolaires.
