Marilyn Edythe Broughton
Composer
Bio
Marilyn was born in Toronto, and has lived there most of her life. She was born to musical parents, Henry and Beatrice Rosevear, and has a brother, David. She studied piano through the Trinity College of Music (London, England). At the University of Toronto, Marilyn studied mathematics and received an honours degree in it. After teacher training, she taught math at two Toronto high schools, and helped with the music programmes after school. She married Peter Broughton, also a math teacher and pianist, and stopped teaching to raise two children, Nancy and Christopher. When the children were old enough for school, Marilyn pursued her interest in composing, and studied with Sam Dolin.
She composed a number of pieces for piano, piano duet, organ, choirs (unison, SA, SSA, and SATB), and for various instruments. She continued working for the Toronto Board of Education as a choir accompanist, and enjoyed working with a number of teachers and composing for their choirs. She is an active member of Glenview Presbyterian Church, is an elder there, sings in the choir, and occasionally composes solos and anthems for the services. She continues to enjoy playing piano duets with her husband.
