Bio

Stephanie Hamelin Tomala is an award winning composer with Ecuadorian and Lebanese origins and a dual American and Canadian citizenship.   She recently scored the TV series "L'Industrie de la Vieille$$e" directed by Denys Desjardins which earned her a nomination for a Prix GÉMEAUX (Gemini Award) by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television in 2021.  Stephanie's recent projects include two collaborations with director Huda Razzak on award-winning animated short  "The Ocean Duck", and an animated short which will be featured on an upcoming episode of "Sesame Street", the upcoming feature documentary directed by Nadia Zouaoui which will air on TV5 in 2024 and the fiction film ''Everything will be all right'' directed by Farad Pakdel which earned a nomination at South by South west film festival (SXSW).

Stephanie's music combines her classical violin background with creative use of her own singing voice and modern production techniques.  She has composed music for multiple productions with the National Film Board of Canada since 2020, including animations  "The Strip Chronicles" , "Terre Ferme",  and the documentary "Sometimes I wish I was on a Desert Island", directed by Eli Jean Tahchi, produced by the National film Board of Canada. Stephanie's score for the feature documentary "I Lost My Mom" (awarded Best Canadian feature documentary at HOTDOCS 2023), was nominated for best documentary score at the Canadian Screen Music Awards. Stephanie has won many awards for her scores including 4 SOCAN Foundation awards for Best Original Music and a nomination from the Hollywood Music in Media Awards for her composition Ceremonial Tribute to Krakow (recorded at the EASTWOOD SCORING STAGE in the WARNER BROS STUDIOS).

Active as an orchestrator, arranger, and award-winning concert music composer, Stephanie's credits include two recent albums produced by famous Quebec singer Mario Pelchat, orchestral arrangements for the Hip-Hop artist Paul K.A.S.P, for Montreal pop singer Sebastien Corn and for Dan Luiten.  She is currently the Composer and Arranger in Residence at the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra.  ​She studied music composition (Master's degree) at the University of Montreal, film scoring at the University of Quebec in Montreal and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Lyon, France. She also took screenwriting classes at the University of Quebec in Montreal.
