Susan Frykberg (1954-2023)

We are deeply saddened to acknowledge the passing of electronic music composer and sound artist Susan Frykberg, who "passed away peacefully at her home in New Zealand on April 7, surrounded by family and friends." (earsay music

Susan was an ACWC member for many years and a founding member of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community and the World Forum of Acoustic Ecology and was involved in CASE (Canadian Association for Sound Ecology). She spent twelve years teaching Acoustic Ecology at Simon Fraser University in Canada who worked with ACWC member Hildegard Westerkamp. 

"A citizen of both New Zealand and Canada, she lived most recently in Melbourne where she was a key part of the music scene over the last 10 years. Frykberg composed more than 80 musical works during her life, including music for acoustic, theatre, and religious settings in addition to many electroacoustic works. For her, music was an expression of her creative, intellectual, and spiritual life, and she was involved in key electroacoustic music scenes wherever she lived..." (www.cutcommonmag.com

One of Susan's most-known compositions was  Astonishing Sense of Being Taken Over by Something Far Greater Than Me, for voices, violin, and tape, released in 1998, a part of her Audio Birth Project.

We will hold Susan in our hearts and remember her through her wonderful music.
